On the 25th
of April 2013, a group of 9 students from Uniersiti Malysia Kelantan had
organized a program with the students of primary school of Sekolah Kebangsaan
Jeli (1). The primary school students was from 5 Cemerlang class with a total
of 43 students. The name of the program that they organized was “3H: Healthy,
Hygiene and Happy”. Through this program, three aspects of a healthy lifestyle
was introduced and taught to the primary school students.
The program was held from 8.00
in the morning until 12.00 noon. It was started with the Health Talk, given by
Ahmad Faizal bin Mohd Yusoff for about one hour. Through the talk, which was
one of the components in the ‘Health’ section, primary students were introduced
with healthy eating habits, its importance and also about the effects of
deficiency and over intake of a particular nutrient in the diet. This was seen
as something very important since the foods nowadays, especially which are
usually consumed by the kids, are not healthy and contain lots of chemicals and
preservatives which are harmful and will give bad health effects through a very
long time. Junk foods have been a very common type of foods and a main cause of
obesity among kids around the world. Thus, balanced diet, as being recommended
in the food pyramid, was stressed out in this program as one of the requirement
to lead on a healthy lifestyle.
The next section which was
‘Happy’ started at around 9.15 in the morning. In this section, the primary
students have to do some missions and participate in a series of outdoor
activities in order for them to complete their missions. To make this activity
more fun and competitive, the students were divided into groups of five. There
were a total of three checkpoints. The first and the second checkpoints were
actually for the students to answer questions based on the Health Talk given
previously. So , they can only gain high points by giving full attention and
remembering the facts that was told in the talk. The third checkpoint was about
games in which they have to participate in a teamwork based activities in order
to be the best team among the others. During this activity, the students work
together and through their laughter and spirits, it is clear that theya re
enjoying themselves.
After all the fun and active
activities, the third section, which was the Hygiene section, took place by asking
the students to practice the correct way of washing hands before eating that
they was taught during the talk session. There are seven steps in order to wash
hands correctly. Hand soap and tissues were provided by organizer. To
reenergize our fellow participants, they were provided with sandwiches,
watermelons and soy drinks after they had successfully wash their hands. Balanced
food was prepared for them as one of the implementation of the healthy
lifestyle. Right after the meal, a small activity, hand painting on a piece of
white cloth, was done as a sign of commitment of all the participants on that
day to practice the knowledge that they got on that day in their life. The hand
painting activity was done successfully with all the primary school students
enjoying themselves and painted the whole cloth into a colourful one.
The event of the day was ended
by the closing ceremony. In the closing ceremony, hampers were given to the
group which obtained top three marks while the other groups were given
consolation prizes. As a token of appreciation to the supportive administration
of Sekolah Kebangsaan Jeli (1), gifts were given to Encik Che Zawawi bin Haji
Abdullah as the principal and also to the head teacher of 5 Cemerlang class.
Hopefully, the students will practice the knowledge that they gained at that
day and lead a healthy and happy life.
